Tourism, one of today’s major global industries, has profoundly impacted virtually every part of the world. However, its global practices and expansion have often led to the destruction of local cultures and environments. Originating as a form of colonization driven by Eurocentric visions of ‘distant, exotic lands,’ tourism continues to perpetuate its dominant practices of relentless growth and expansion.
This talk will explore the urgent need to decolonize tourism, transforming it into a powerful catalyst for positive change and local regeneration. By highlighting the multisectoral nature of tourism and its reliance on local resources, particularly food, we will examine how embracing local cultures and ecosystems can lead to sustainable and enriching tourism practices. Join us to discover how tourism can be reimagined to support and regenerate the very communities it touches.
